Beret flashes and background trimmings are authorized under the provisions of paragraph 28-31, AR 670-1.
A beret flash is authorized for divisions, brigades, groups, regiments, battalions and separate companies/detachments authorized to wear the maroon (Airborne), tan (Ranger) or green (Special Forces) berets. All other soldiers wear the Army flash on the black beret.
A background trimming is authorized for organizations which are designated airborne or air assault. In addition, all units assigned to the 101st Airborne Division are authorized a background trimming even though they are not authorized a beret flash since their mission is not airborne operations.
Requests for authorization of a flash or trimming may be sent to TIOH. The request must include a copy of permanent orders, the personnel section of the unit’s MTOE and a color design of the insignia. The flash and trimming will not contain design elements except geometrical divisions or shapes. These items are not available through the supply system. They may be obtained through local purchase procedures from manufacturers certified by TIOH.
